Facts about Aarhus River

Aarhus River is 32 km long and its source is Solbjerg Lake.

Since the viking age, Aarhus River has been important to the city. Presumably, the river is the reason why Aarhus emerged in the first place. Nowadays, the river is still a gathering point for the city’s citizens and guests.

Opening of the river

Due to hygienic and traffic causes, the river was culverted around 1930, thus hiding its run through the city to the bay.

In 1989, Aarhus City Council decided to reopen the river.

The reopening has taken place in stages and with the construction of Mediaspace and the new urban waterfront the final stage of the river – from Europaplads into the harbour – will be reopened.
